The 2024 Kia EV9 exceeds 300 miles, but it lags behind some competitors
The 2024 Kia EV9 Light Long Range RWD can get the most out of its battery, while the GT-Line has the most fun but won’t have the same range.
The 2024 Kia EV9 may be the most anticipated new electric vehicle since the Tesla Cybertruck. The industry needs more full-size electric SUVs to attract consumers who are ready to switch to electric vehicles but want something big enough for the whole family. We know how much the EV9 will costBut now Kia has finally given us the range numbers.
The EV9 is available in five models, but if range is most important to you, you’ll want to opt for the lightweight, long-range rear-wheel-drive configuration. This configuration maxes out at 304 miles, and industry trends tell us this is the best option for alleviating range anxiety. On the other hand, the 304-mile range is slightly less than the EV6 Long Range RWD’s 310 miles. The EV9’s long cruising range is also a little lackingOther full-size SUV competitors, like the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq And Rivian R1S.
How Much Range Does The 2024 Kia EV9 Have?
Trim | Range (EPA Est. ) |
Kia EV9 Light RWD 76.1 kWh Battery | 230 miles |
Kia EV9 Light Long Range RWD 99.8 kWh Battery | 304 miles |
Kia EV9 Wind e-AWD 99.8 kWh Battery | 280 miles |
Kia EV9 Land e-AWD 99.8 kWh Battery | 280 miles |
Kia EV9 GT-Line e-AWD 99.8 kWh Battery | 270 miles |
The good news is that some EV9 models exceed our initial expectations. For example, dual-motor models like the EV9 Wind and EV9 Land have a range of up to 280 miles, but we expect it to reach 270 miles. An extra 10 miles may not seem like a lot, but it could mean the difference between getting to the next charging station orWatch your electric car being loaded onto a flatbed. Even more impressive is that the performance-focused GT-Line model has a range of 270 miles, which is better than the 243 miles we expected.
However, this is not all good news. The base rear-wheel drive EV9 Light fell well short of our hopes, only achieving a disappointing 230 miles of range (Contrary to what we thought 260 miles) before its 76.1 kilowatt-hour battery runs out. Being 30 miles ahead of the forecast is never a good thing. However, the EV9 Light’s starting price of $56,395 softens the blow somewhat.
There is still a lot to know about the 2024 Kia EV9, but it can be said that now we know the most important data from the buyer’s perspective. With a starting price of just under $57,000 but a range of just 230 miles, can an entry-level EV9 make a splash in the emerging field of full-size electric SUVs? Can the EV9 Light Long Range RWD turn buyers away from the Cadillac Lyriq and its luxury features? We can’t wait to put the EV9 up against the other contenders and find out.
